ummer on the front porch—life
just slows down there. You have
different conversations on a porch.
You see your neighbors more. And
you can smell your garden’s
fragrance on the breeze.
This was the scenario Barbara
DeLong dreamed of the moment she saw an old
photo of her Bethel, Connecticut, house. Her
fixer-upper 1890s Victorian was a fading beauty
when she bought it for a song in 2003, but the photo
revealed what previous owners had deleted decades
before: an expansive wraparound porch, painted
fretwork, and to-die-for architectural detail.
When Barbara re-created the original porch, she
also reinstated the grace and charm that her grande
dame house deserved, decking out the platform in
period style with bouquets and pastel accents. “I’m
very Victorian,” Barbara says about her tastes.
